Snapshots

11’ 1985

For piano

This is a set of character pieces that provides a short description of my former colleagues in Composers in Red Sneakers: Herman Weiss, Christopher Stowens, Roger Bourland, Thomas Oboe Lee, Richard Cornell and Robert Aldridge. In some snapshots, I attempted to write in the style of the composer. In others, I used some of the composer’s material and treated it differently than they had. This performance is by Herman Weiss and was given in Sanders Theater at Harvard University. It dates from about 1985.

This is a performance by Herman Weiss, at Sanders Theater on the campus of Harvard University

Herman Weiss — It must have been a strange experience for Herman to play a piece based on his own style.

Chris Stowens — at the time was working at the intersection of classical and jazz. He’s since added photography to his kit

Roger Bourland — I took a theme of his and stuck it in a canon. Roger went on to a long career at UCLA

Thomas Oboe Lee — also used a lot of jazz in his writing. Tom was the only Sneaker who’d reached 40. We ribbed him about his old age.

I took a bit of Richard Cornell’s cello sonata and had fun with it. Dick went on to a distinguished career at Boston University

Robert Aldridge — always enjoyed turning his compositional knob up to 11. This little movement is a tip of the hat to Bob.
